Newport City Council Wins National Credit Union Title

Newport City Council has received a national award for helping to improve the financial wellbeing of its staff.

The Credit Unions of Wales Award was in recognition of the local authority’s commitment to supporting the social welfare of its staff by encouraging them to access a range of affordable financial services from their local credit union.

The council was nominated in the Payroll Partner (Public Sector) category following a long-term partnership with Newport Credit Union. Chairman Reg Smith presented the award outside the Newport Civic Building.

Leader of Newport City Council Cllr Jane Mudd said: ““We are delighted to receive this award. Credit unions offer an affordable and democratic alternative to high street banks, and we are passionate about promoting the services of Newport Credit Union to our staff.

“It is important that the council supports organisations like Newport Credit Union that are rooted in our local community and contribute to the economic well-being and resilience of the city.”

Council officers actively promote credit Union membership with payslip messages, features and links on its intranet and staff app and weekly credit union promotions in its offices. Information is also included in induction packs and adverts in its monthly newspaper resulting in increased staff take-up.

Jane Hutt MS, Patron of Credit Unions of Wales said: “The Credit Unions of Wales Awards has once again highlighted the many success stories of this global movement and I want to congratulate each of the winners for their dedication and commitment to the cause.

“As financial cooperative, credit unions have a major role to play in the economic health of Wales by offering easy access to ethical savings and affordable loans.

“Once again, congratulations to the many businesses, organisations, members, volunteers and schools who have been recognised for their contribution to the success of credit unions across Wales.”

The Credit Unions of Wales Awards were sponsored by Engage and supported by the Welsh Government.

Geoff Leech, Managing Director of Engage added: “Engage Account is delighted to be sponsoring the Credit Unions of Wales Awards for the third consecutive time and we are continually impressed by the high standards of entries.

“This year is no exception as they illustrate once more the commitment and dedication of businesses, workers, organisations, members and volunteers towards the global credit union movement.

“We congratulate all of the winners and highly commended for all that they do to further the incredible work of ethical savings and loan providers across Wales.”
